How to choose a Klaviyo agency

Choose a Klaviyo agency that understands why your customers buy, what should make them buy again and how your data supports those decisions. Verify its platform experience, then examine lifecycle strategy, execution quality, deliverability, measurement and the people assigned to your account.

A provider can know the interface well and still send unhelpful email. The important skill is deciding who should receive which message, under what conditions, and what the business expects to gain.

Define the retention problem first

Your needs may include migrating platforms, fixing broken data, improving first-to-second purchase, recovering abandoned checkouts or making campaigns less dependent on discounts. Those require different work.

Give finalists your current setup, principal products, purchase cycle, promotional calendar and known problems. Provide sensitive data only through an appropriate access and confidentiality arrangement. Ask for a preliminary diagnosis with assumptions, not a confident forecast built from your logo and annual revenue.

For a replenishable product, timing may matter greatly. For durable goods, repeat purchase might take years, so education, accessories or referrals may deserve more attention. A standard flow library needs adaptation to the business.

Verify company credentials and individual skill

Check the agency's current listing in the Klaviyo Service Partner Directory. Ask which training and credentials the assigned practitioners hold and how recently they worked on comparable accounts.

Klaviyo's partner agreement describes different tracks and tiers, with qualifying criteria and benefits that can change. Treat the current tier as evidence of program standing rather than a warranty of results. Ask about referral compensation or other commercial incentives behind platform recommendations. An agency's top credential holder may never work on your account. Meet the people who will build and review the program.

Ask to see lifecycle reasoning

Request a walkthrough of one redacted flow. The agency should explain its trigger, eligibility, exclusions, timing, branching and exit conditions. It should also explain what happens when a person buys, unsubscribes or enters another relevant journey.

“Ten flows included” is incomplete. A flow can contain one message or many, with different branches and substantial data work. Ask what the fee counts and who maintains the logic as the business changes.

Deliverability needs an accountable person

Ask who reviews authentication, consent sources, sending practices and complaint signals. Request the response plan for a sudden deliverability decline. Distinguish content and list-management work from DNS changes that your technical team must make.

Gmail has additional authentication and unsubscribe requirements for bulk senders to personal Gmail accounts. The agency should know which requirements apply to your sending setup and how it verifies them. Compliance with technical sender rules does not by itself guarantee inbox placement. Gmail sender guidelines.

Treat a recommendation to send broadly to poorly understood contacts as a reason to ask more questions. A platform's ability to send to a profile does not establish permission to market to that person.

Be precise about revenue attribution

Ask which attribution windows and interaction settings apply to the account, whether Apple privacy opens are excluded, and how changes are documented. Klaviyo's conversion-tracking documentation explains how these choices affect reporting. Klaviyo conversion tracking.

Evaluate reported revenue alongside business records, customer cohorts and contribution after relevant costs. A larger share of revenue attributed to email is not automatically evidence that the whole business gained an equivalent amount.

For experimentation, ask what can be tested with your available audience and volume. A credible agency should identify when a holdout is practical, when the result would be too noisy, and which operational decisions can still be made without claiming causal proof.

Read case-study metrics literally

Klaviyo's Half Magic case study, which names Lilo Social, reports fivefold year-over-year growth in the number of repeat purchasers. A count of repeat purchasers is different from the repeat-purchase rate. The vendor-published story is useful evidence to investigate, but it is not a forecast for your account. Half Magic case study.

For any agency case, ask about the starting audience, acquisition growth, offers, measurement period and the team's contribution. More customers entering the business can produce more repeat purchasers even without an equivalent improvement in retention rate.

Separate agency fees from software costs

Request setup and migration costs, ongoing campaign and flow work, platform charges, SMS or other messaging usage, and optional products as separate items. Ask what happens as the account grows.

Klaviyo's billing documentation bases the relevant email/profile plan on active profiles and sending allowances. Its definition of an active profile can include people who have not opted into marketing. The agency should reconcile billing population, consent and sending eligibility instead of treating those as interchangeable counts. Klaviyo billing.

Use email agency pricing to compare scopes. Require approval for paid add-ons and material plan changes.

Make the first phase useful on its own

The initial engagement should leave you with an understood data setup, prioritized lifecycle plan, ownership map and a documented set of improvements. Agree on who owns accounts, templates, copy, custom code and reporting exports.

Ask the agency what it would deliberately postpone. The answer should reflect your audience, resources and economics. A capable Klaviyo partner can explain which messages deserve to exist before arguing about how many to send.
