How to choose a Shopify agency

Choose a Shopify agency with recent experience delivering the kind of store, migration or integration you need, using a team you can meet before signing. Verify its credentials separately, then evaluate technical decisions, ownership, testing and post-launch support. A partner badge helps establish platform involvement; it cannot tell you whether a particular team is right for your project.

A theme adjustment, a wholesale implementation and a complex replatforming are different purchases. Start by describing the buying and operating workflows the finished store must support.

Define the job before choosing the agency

Write down what your customers need to do and what your staff need to manage. Include the exceptions: partial refunds, backorders, bundles, wholesale terms, subscription changes or multiple currencies where relevant. Specify which systems already exist and which must remain.

Ask the agency which requirements can use native features, which require apps and which need custom development. Each custom component creates maintenance obligations. Request the reason for accepting those obligations and a simpler alternative where one exists.

Check what the badge means today

As checked in September 2026, Shopify's guaranteed Partner Directory eligibility starts at Plus tier and includes both commercial-impact and credential requirements. Limited Registered-tier partners can also receive listings. The official eligibility page describes the requirements; a generic Shopify Partner claim alone is a weaker signal. Shopify Partner Directory eligibility.

Use the live listing to verify the agency's identity and current status. Ask which credentials belong to the people assigned to your engagement. Company-level recognition can coexist with an inexperienced proposed team.

Avoid treating an old “Shopify Expert” graphic as a complete current credential. Have the provider show the program, tier and listing behind the claim. Then continue with the project evaluation. The badge has done its job once it helps you ask better questions.

Ask for evidence from comparable complexity

A beautiful live site is useful evidence of appearance. Find out who designed it, who built it, what third parties contributed, and whether the team pitching you worked on it.

Request an explanation of one difficult tradeoff. Perhaps an app reduced initial cost but limited a workflow. Perhaps the agency chose a standard theme to let the merchant launch faster. Good engineering includes choosing what to leave alone.

For a migration, ask how the agency reconciled products, customers, orders and other agreed data. Which records could not move? What happened to subscriptions, customer access or historic reporting? Different platforms and apps have different constraints; the agency should discover yours before committing to a frictionless transfer.

Make acceptance measurable

Agree on tests before the project is priced. They should include core journeys and important failure states, with test data and a person responsible for signing off.

Examples include a customer buying with a valid discount, attempting an invalid discount, paying for a mixed cart, receiving the correct transactional messages and obtaining a refund. Add inventory and fulfillment reconciliation. For B2B, include the buyer's actual approval, pricing and payment workflow.

Include mobile use and keyboard access. Decide what accessibility target and testing scope the agency will deliver. WCAG conformance considers complete processes, which matters when a storefront looks accessible but checkout does not. A claim about a few page templates is narrower than a claim about the whole purchase journey. WCAG 2.2.

Define how defects are classified and resolved. A launch date becomes negotiable if customers cannot reliably order. Cosmetic differences may have a different resolution timetable.

Protect search visibility during a migration

Have the agency inventory valuable old URLs and map them to relevant destinations. Include metadata and content in the migration plan where appropriate. Test redirects and check the launched store for unexpected indexing restrictions.

Shopify documents redirect creation and post-launch checks in its migration guidance. Ask who owns monitoring after cutover and what happens when a missed page is found. Moving every old URL to the home page makes reconciliation easy for the spreadsheet and frustrating for the customer. Shopify migration guide.

No credible agency can guarantee there will be no search fluctuation. It can commit to an explicit migration process, testing and response plan.

Keep access and ownership understandable

Use named access with appropriate permissions instead of sharing the owner's login. Shopify provides collaborator accounts whose access the merchant can manage and remove. Give only the permissions the work requires. Shopify collaborator accounts.

The contract should address the theme license, app accounts, custom source code, repositories, design files, documentation and third-party components. Clarify which assets you own, which you license, and what rights survive the agency relationship.

Ask the agency to demonstrate deployment, recovery and a common merchant edit. Documentation nobody can use is an expensive attachment.

Price the year after launch

Request the initial project fee plus a schedule of recurring platform, app, support and maintenance costs. Separate defect correction from enhancements. Establish response expectations for a broken checkout and distinguish response time from resolution time.

If the proposal recommends headless architecture or extensive custom code, ask who will maintain it, which capabilities your staff lose, and why the commercial benefit justifies the operating cost. Technical ambition should serve a documented need.

Shortlist through Agency Field Guide, use the general buyer scorecard, and make the deciding evidence a complete, supportable store your team can operate after the launch celebration ends.
